A prominent civil rights activist throughout the progressive movements of the 1960's and 50's, Martin Luther King Jr. played a key role in what eventually turned out to be the establishment of the Civil Rights Act of 1963. 5 years after much of his political effort paid off, he was fatally shot by fugitive James Earl Ray. His death was one of sincere grief in the liberal community as he was one of their front-runners for many years. His works such as the I Have a Dream speech, were hugely influential in changing the mind and ways of American society, and as a result his death was a great loss to the movement.
