The Caliph Othman decided, at the request of the people of Makkah, to abandon the old landing of Shuaybah (20 km south of Jeddah) in favour of Jeddah that became the port of Makkah and began to receive the pilgrims coming from the sea to Makkah.Source: UNESCO nomination document, SCTA
