1 juin 1767 - The Townshend Acts

Description:

Starting with the passage of The New York Restraining Act in 1767 and ending with the passage of The Vice Admiralty Court Act of 1768, parliament made good its implied threats to pass additional taxation measures for the colonies as they saw fit.
Named for Charles Townshend, Chancellor of the Exchequer, the acts were actually a series of five laws designed to both exert British authority in America, and to raise much needed revenue for Britain to defend its far flung empire.
The inevitable reaction in the colonies was resentment, which led to actions like boycotts of the goods which were taxable.
The colonial unrest simmered and eventually boiled over in a watershed event known as the Boston Tea Party.
