The Great Charter was created mainly to limit the kings power so he did not abuse it as he did before. It Consisted of 63 articles, this ensured that the king would not mishandle his power again, ensured that everyone would be subject to the law even the king. Although many clause of the Magna Carta was to protect the English upper class and landowners by granting them rights and these demands where made only by barons the king agreed to and accepted their demands which was rare at the time. A council of 25 barons would be created to legislate the Magna Carta and if anyone, including the King or any royals go against what is in this document legal consequences would be faced. King John signed this document in Runnymede on 15th of June, 1215.

This important document significantly emphasis the rule of law, a principle which promotes individualism. The Great charter ensured that everyone is subject to the law including the royals. During this period of time, usually the king's power was unlimited and the fact that agreed to change that and place a limit to his power, this was a significant improvement on equality and classical liberalism.
