19 janv. 1913 - 1913, Russian Empire.

Description:

In 1912, Sergei Rachmaninoff quit his position as vice-president of the Russian Musical Society in protest when he heard that a musician in an administrative post with the society was dismissed on the grounds of being Jewish, this wasn’t uncommon in an Empire that had exclusionary policy towards Jews since centuries before. Rachmaninoff biographer Sergei Bertensson wrote that Rachmaninoff took his position in the society seriously, "and for Rachmaninoff 'seriously' meant with moral as well as artistic seriousness: these were really fused in him." Soon after his resignation, Rachmaninoff was exhausted from overworking and took his family on holiday in Switzerland and Rome were he started to work on his Piano Sonata No. 2, Op. 36.
Its premiere took place in St. Petersburg in December 1913.

Now, after this period it gets tricky. Most of the classical music composers in the Russian Empire emigrated permanently after the transition the country went through in 1918, however some of them later returned to the country and contributed to what would later be called Soviet music.
