-Alexander rode through the city of Gordian where he was shown the chariot of their ancient leader, tied to a pole by a intricate knot.
- Legend says whoever could untie the knot would be the future ruler of Asia. Boldly, Alexander took his sword and slashed the knot, successfully untying it.
- The phrase "The Cutting of the Gordian Knot" is now used to describe a bold solution to a complicated problem.
