1 jan 1229 ans - Church forbids translations of the Bible and most reading by the common people

Description:

In 1229, the Council of Troulouse was called in response to rising heresy. Cannons were created that told how to deal with people seen as heretics as well as one that read, ‘We prohibit also that the laity should be permitted to have the books of the Old and the New Testament; unless anyone from the motives of devotion should wish to have the Psalter or the Breviary for divine offices or the hours of the blessed Virgin; but we most strictly forbid their having any translation of these books.’ (Edward Peters. Heresy and Authority in Medieval Europe, Council of Toulouse, 1229, Canon 14, p 195.) The decree that the Bible was only the be read in Latin was affirmed in the Tarragona Council of 1234.
