Huge increase in size of armies to accommodate for territorial expansion
Noble values of glory + honor > safety + material gain; many noble officers died leading men into battle
Nobles also financed wars (--> fell into debt) by paying for their position as officers and the units they commanded; french govt didn’t fully pay for troops until 1760
