Description:

Frederick Douglass becomes the first black U.S. marshal in 1877 under president Rutherford Hayes. He was a national leader for the abolitionist movement in the Northeast U.S. and was especially well known for stirring writings. This was a huge accomplishment and success for African Americans as it depicted their growing civil rights movement.
