- despite assurances post WWII that Germany would remain demilitarised- convinced the Soviet Union that there was a threat of a powerful Germany appearing on their doorstep once again
- may have led to/hastened the signing of the Warsaw Pact
- not very likely as the Warsaw Pact was only days later and politics doesn't work that fast
