13 juin 1789 - Calling of the Estates General ad National Assembly

Description:

Estates General- Created in 1789, a general assembly representing the French Estates (first estate, second estate, and third estate). Brought to an end when the estate formed into a National Assembly.

National Assembly- The third estate met on their own and invited members of the other estates to join them. On June 13, 1789, the Third Estate declared itself the "National Assembly." They would begin making their own laws and running the country.

Calling of the Estates- Initially, the Assembly announced (and for the most part probably believed) itself to be operating in the interests of King Louis XVI as well as those of the people. In theory, royal authority still prevailed and new laws continued to require the king's consent.
