Joseph Priestly is most commonly known for being the first person to scientifically isolate oxygen. He discovered plants produce oxygen by performing an experiment by putting a plant and a candle with a lit flame in a container, the candle flame used up the oxygen and went out. Although, he did not know then that it was an element.
