Description:

California Proposition 227 impacted Bilingual programs across the state by effecting funding and imposing annual time limits on English-development courses. While Limited English Proficient (LEP) students were still required to take courses, instruction was required to be majority English within supplemental courses that lasted one-year, compared to previous multi-year Bilingual instruction. Additionally, for the following decade, the legislation mandated the state to spend $50 million annually on instructional aide for LEP students (BALLOTPEDIA, N.D.).
