3 nov 1534 - Henry VIII ends Papal Authority in England
Description:
King Henry VIII was a very traditional ruler when it came to religion. He even condemned Martin Luther earning the title "Defender of the Faith" from the pope. However, he started to have issues in his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, so he tried to get a papal annulment on the basis that his brother had already been married to her. Under pressure from Catherine's nephew Charles V, the pope didn't fulfill this request. Thus, Henry separated the English church from Catholic control with many measures including the dissolution of the monasteries and the 1534 Act of Supremacy. This decision to shift to a more Reformed approach caused turmoil in the late Tudor period as his daughter Mary supported Catholicism and his other daughter Elizabeth encouraged middle-of-the-road Protestantism. It eventually led to many new Protestant sects including Puritanism and Quakers.
