26 août 1526 - Turkish Victory at Mohacs
Description:
In the 1520s, the Reformation moved to Hungary. Hungarian scholars brought Lutheran ideas back with them after studying in Wittenburg, and they held prominence in the region. However, many higher nobles disliked it, so they issued a decree in 1523 which called for the persecution of Lutherans as heretics. Before this decree could be enforced, the Ottomans attacked at the plains of Mohacs in 1526. The Turks captured the southeastern part of Hungary with the Habsburgs seizing the north and Transylvania owning the east. As an effect, Lutheranism again gained prominence with the Turks taxing all Christians indiscriminately. This was one of the last regions to accept Protestantism before Catholicism saw a bit of a resurgence.
