With the Defiance Campaign spiralling out of the ANC's control, the response of the government was typically swift and decisive.It introduced the Criminal Law Amendment Act in March 1953.
This allowed courts to hand down longer sentences and introduces whipping as a punishment for "offences committed by way of protest".
