17 sept. 1968 - CGI
Description:
The acronym CGI stands for computer generated images. The development of CGI started in 1968 when a group of Russian mathematicians and physicists, led by N. Konstantinov, developed a groundbreaking mathematical model that allowed a cat to move across a screen. This led scientists to turn the model into a program for a special mainframe computer with the name BESM-4. This new computer was able to print hundreds of frames which when processed could be turned into usable film footage.
The 1970s was a major development for CGI with the first animated short film drawn on a tablet by Peter Foldes in 1970. This was later followed by CGI being used in a national television programme and the first 2D animated effect in Westworld in 1973. CGI continued to progress over the decades and in 1993 Steven Spielburg cr eated the first photo realistic CGI creatures in Jurassic Park.
CGI was a very important development to TV and film as it is commonly used today in films such as Star Wars and Avatar both of which are two of the highest grossing films of all time. This means that people are drawn to films with CGI because it is perceived as an ultimate universe making them extremely popular.
