Description:

The British decision to abolish slavery in 1833 l3d some Boers to undertake the famous Great Trek to their "promised land", where they would be free of the interference of the foreign, ungodly British.

The fortunate coincidence that many of the lands where they had settled had been extensively depopulated as a result of the Mfecane (a period of widespread chaos and warfare among indigenous ethnic communities in southern Africa) earlier in the century reinforced this sense of divine deliverance.
