Fantastic and romantic tale also borrowing from the travel story, it reflects the interest of the author for mineralogyand the natural sciences in general. The main character, Alexis, a German mineralogy student, falls in love with his cousin Laura who does not take him seriously and favors his friend Walter. Alexis is gradually assailed by visions in which Laura loves him and makes him glimpse a beautiful country composed of giant colored crystals. Alexis fails to reconcile her visions and reality until, shortly before the wedding of Laura and Walter, Laura's father, Nasias, mysteriously arises in his life and hypnotizes him with the help of a diamond to lead him on a crazy expedition to the North Pole, in search of the land of the crystal of which he also had visions.
