The hero, Victorin is a young commoner in love with Christine, daughter of a local lord : this love seems impossible. But with the help of an ingenious servant, Jean Vezinier, he designs a flying machine. Victorin then marks Mont-Inaccessible, a summit of Dauphine where you can only access by the air. He brings plants, fruits and vegetables, agricultural tools, domestic animals, servants of Christine's father, and even a priest to form a kind of state.
He takes Christine away and settles with her at the Mont-Inacessible. He marries her and they found together a small society of which they form the aristocracy. The couple have three children, who also learn to fly. The patriarchal community, led by an enlightened despot, eventually reaches three hundred individuals. After twenty years, wishing to expand his estate and make his wife the queen of a real kingdom, Victorin flies with his youngest son, Alexander, to the South Seas. He hopes to discover new lands and develop a kind of colonial empire .
Victorin and his son discover the Isle of Man-of-Night. Victorin renamed it Christine Island and imported the inhabitants and the laws of Mont-Inaccessible. the Night-Men end up being tamed. Christinians come into contact with the Patagonians, debonair giants who live on a nearby island and create good trading relationships with them.
From the marriage of a son of Victorin to the half-human, half-animal peoples
The eldest son of Victorin marries a Patagonian, Ishmichtriss. A relative equality reigns among the Christinians because only the family of Victorin has the privilegeto fly. Exploration and settlement activities on neighboring lands are conducted solely by Victorin and his sons. In the following years, about twenty islands are discovered in the archipelago of which Christine Island is part. On each of these islands live tribes of fantastic creatures hybrid, half-human, half-animal: the ape-men, the bear-men, the dog-men, the pig-men, the bull-men, the human-men sheep, beaver-men, goat-men, horse-men, donkey-men, frog-men, snake-men, elephant-men, lion-and-men-men, bird-men, and even oyster-men! ... During each exploration, a young specimen of a couple of the species Hybrid is kidnapped, taken to educate and civilize him on Christine Island, reduce their share of animality and later hand them over to their island to spread the Empire over the southern hemisphere.
Megapatagonia, its foundations and its consequences on Christine Island

Even the human species is a continuous creation: it has no origin ; it comes only from a cellular differentiationprogressive between elementary and elaborate forms of life. The obvious consequence is that humanity is not a distinct species, only a surviving form in a series of evolutions of the "Great Chain of Being ". The Enlightenment philosophers are recognizable Mégapatagonie: Did-Taana ( Diderot ), Voltaâna ( Voltaire ) and Rouftaâna ( Rousseau ). The moral mégapatonienne is based on this cosmology. During a trip over the Indies, Hermantin flies over the Portuguese colony of Goa , saves from a burning of Muslims , Jews and Protestants , and delivers an ecumenical speech that leaves the Portuguese stunned.
