Also allowed each individual territory to determine the religion of the territory, although it did not allow for complete freedom of religion. It also resolved a decades long religious war in Germany—with Germany being split between a Lutheran state and a Roman Catholic state. Furthermore, it ended Charles V’s hope of unifying an empire under a single church, and stepped down, transferring power to his son Philip and brother Ferdinand.
