30 mai 1526 - Turkish Victory at Mohacs
Description:
Throughout reformation in Eastern Europe, while Lutheran students had brought Protestantism into Hungary, where it found a large amount of supporters among the royal hierarchy, the Hungarian Diet—catholic nobility in Hungary—decreed in 1523 that Lutheranism was outlawed. However, the Turkish victor at Mohacs in 1526 resulted in the death of many nobles, and Ottoman Turks absorbed Hungary into the Ottoman empire. The Turks did not care about Christian split, regarding all supporters as infidels, and all Christians were taxed extra—the majority of the peasantry being protestant. It was not until Ottoman turks withdrew and Hungarian nobles recognized Catholic rule that Catholicism returned to Hungary.
