5 mai 1760 - French Revolution Begins Causes: Famine, Class/Social Inequality, Lack of money, and Spread of Enlightenment Ideals

Description:

Famine: In 1788 a severe winter resulted in famine and widespread starvation in the countryside. Rising prices in Paris brought bread riots.
Class/Social Inequality: The 1st and 2nd Estate, or the clergy and nobles, made up around 2% of the French population, but they owned more than 25% of the land and were not taxed at all.

Lack of money: Because of helping America and an inefficient tax structure the entire state quickly became poor and fell into an economic crisis.

Spread of Enlightenment Ideals: Many thinkers and wonderers began questioning the current ideals and authority. This was stoked by the encouragement of education, which led people to try to find their own answers to things, not just accept the answers they were told. For example, more and more people began questioning if God actually chose the king on the throne?
