The Catholic Philip II of Spain wanted to overthrow Elizabeth I in order to reunite England with the Catholic Church, so he planned an invasion with the Spanish Armada. Although the Armada was larger, the English ships were more maneuverable and had long-range guns. At Gravelines, the English prevailed and the Spanish had to turn around, and storms and disease devastated the Armada as it went back to Spain.
