Trans Saharan trade began with the introduction of camels. Camels were super important because they were robust and could walk for tons of time on little food and water. Camels also were the foundation of Caravans, which made trading over long distances safer. This trade system was super important because it connected Rome to most of Africa, and this led to tons more luxury items in Rome. (2.3)
