3 janv. 1777 - Battle of Princeton

Description:

Washington and his men were exhausted from the march to Trenton so they decided to stay in the city. Cornwallis, having learned of the vulnerable American force, decided to march on Trenton. Along the way he passed Princeton, where he left a force of 1,200 redcoats behind. After being delayed by several attacks and ambushes from Colonel Edward Hand, Cornwallis arrived in Trenton on January 2, 1777. At 1AM that night, General Washington led his force of 5,000 men around the British camp and went on the way to Princeton. To mask this movement, Washington left 400 troops behind at the camp to leave the impression of nocturnal activity, this included leaving the campfires burning all night. Washington quickly overwhelmed Lieutenant Colonel Charles Mawhood and the British force at Princeton before Cornwallis could even catch up. 23 Americans died, and 20 more were wounded. 28 British died, 58 were wounded, and 187 went missing. This defeat led General Howe to decide to leave most of New Jersey to Washington.
