Augustus founded the Roman empire and ushered in the Pax Romana, a period of peace in Rome. He ruled the Roman empire as a monarchy but tried to hide his true power under the veil of a tradition republic. His empire was characterized by an economy stimulated by flourishing trade both over Roman roads and Roman sea lanes that linked the entire Mediterranean, fair systems of law reflecting those of today in that they treat everyone equally, beautifully built cities, and a variety of cultures and religions.
