1 janv. 323 - Christianity Becomes Official State Religion of the Roman Empire

Description:

Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire through sheer size, popularity, and the emperor of Rome at that time, Constantine the Great, deciding to stop the persecution of Christians, the Roman government officially made Christianity the religion of the Roman Empire. The reasons for Constantine’s decisions remain unclear, but a common reason is that he believed if he put the cross, a religious symbol in Christianity, on his soldier shields before a battle, they would win that fight. His troops ended up securing victory and Constantine felt strongly about the Christian faith. Though the Roman government initially viewed Christianity as a political threat to their government and killed many Christians, the government converted to christianity and the religion even survived the fall of the Roman Empire and is currently the world’s largest religion.
