17 déc. 1950 - Winter of Terror, Austro-Swiss Alps
Description:
The Winter of Terror was one of the worst periods in the history of the Alps. During the winter of 1950-1951, multiple avalanches along the Austro-Swiss alpine border claimed over 265 human lives and destroyed many residential communities and man-made structures in Austria and Switzerland. Both countries lost thousands of acres of commercially valuable forests in the disaster. An unusual series of weather events is responsible for the Winter of Terror. All avalanches occurred within a three month period in the winter of 1950-1951.
