As the French Revolution occurred, the poor citizens (mostly slaves) of the French colony Saint Domingue rose up against their French masters and in August of 1791, 100,000 slaves rebelled. After a war lead by former slave General Toussaint L'Ouverture, Haiti was finally declared independent on January 1, 1804.
