Ideas from the Age of Enlightenment contributed to the revolution of 1776. At the time, each group of Great Britain's colonies had to pay heavy taxes and tariffs on imported goods. The settlers did not want to be ruled by a government from abroad and declared themselves independent from Great Britain with the "Declaration of Independence".
The American Revolution in 1776 contributed to the development of classical liberalism in that the Americans used the ideas of John Locke to inspire their declaration of independence from the British Crown. They believed that individuals had the right to use their reason and logic to make their own decisions. In addition, their belief was illustrated in the establishment of a Republic, where the governing authority was invested in the hands of the individual.
