Jacques Cartier was a French explorer. He live in the years, 1491-1557. He was born in Brittany France. He went to America to find, gold, spices, and possibly a short cut to Asia. But instead he found St. Lawrence River, which became Frances mane rout to Canada.In 1534 he was asked by the king to make a journey to America. Still in 1534 he sailed across the Atlantic Ocean what is now Canada. Jacques Cartier went back home and brought two native Americans with. In the same year he came back. This time he went farther into the St. Lawrence River. He reached the village of Stadicona. He reported tales of treasure of the Native Americans. He came back after that, and died near St. Malo, on September 1, 1557
