Description:

Establishment of St George's Anglo- Indian Higher Secondary School.

It is the oldest formal school imparting Western education in India. Originally established as St. Mary's Charity School by Rev.W.Stevenson in 1715.

Charity schools were established based on similar model in England which were primarily meant for poor children or orphans. Initially schools Instructed in Portugeese, which then the lingua franca at the factories of the Company, but they later switched to English.
