12 sept. 1309 - The first siege of Gibraltar

Description:

The first siege of Gibraltar concerns the attempts of two kingdoms led by Ferdinand IV of Castile and James II of Aragon to take over Gibraltar in what was known as ‘Spanish Reconquista’. As Gibraltar held strategic importance due to its location near the entrance of Mediterranean Sea which consequently gave natural defensive advantages to its conqueror, the kingdoms besieged it for a month before succeeding to conquer the place. They went against the Muslim Emirate of Granada ruled by Sultan Muhammed III and resulted in the winning on Ferdinand’s side. The event is considered significant to me as it profoundly increased the power of Castile kingdom upon the incorporation of city of Gibraltar into Castile, which consequently, strengthened the influence of the Catholic monarchs in the Iberian Peninsula.
