24 janv. 323 - Porphyry Column of Constantine

Description:

Constantinople, 4th century

The stone used in their pillar was reserved for imperial uses only. The column is topped with a statue of Apollo/Helios or Constantine as that deity. The figure holds a sphere which contained a relic of the True Cross. This seems to be a display of syncretic tendencies.
