Charlemagne (Charles the Great) became king of the Franks in 768 and by 800 had become the most powerful European ruler, with Pope Leo III crowning him Emperor. Charlemagne’s successful military campaigns created an empire that took in Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland and areas of Austria, Italy, Germany and Spain.
