Description:
Their paper showed that in the visual cortex of monkey's, individual neurons, or groups of neurons, responding to different regions of the monkey's vision. These areas overlap, and the outputs of the neuron groups are combined to recognize the full image. They also found that there were both simple cells and complex cells, that deal with edge recognition and patterns of light. This research inspired the design of neocognitrons and later CNNs.
