22 févr. 1787 - Assembly of Notables

Description:

The Assembly of notables was a council of advisors assembled by King Louis' financial advisor, Charles-Alexandre de Calonne. The Assembly was an ancient institution, and was enacted by King Louis in an attempt to gain support for is proposed reforms, which had previously been prevented by the Parlements. The Notables, however, rejected Calonnes reforms, as they were mainly made up of the haute bourgeoise, which proposed significant cuts to government expenditure and tax reform, which would limit the tax loopholes given to the first and second estates. Unsurprisingly, the reforms were most popular among the third estate, but were rejected by the haute bourgeoise, and the first and second estates.
