Hernan Cortes is one the most famous Spanish Conquistadors, while he never went to texas directly, he had a hand in the fall of the empire just a shy south of Texas, The Aztecs. To sum up his great adventure, He burned the boats to say no turning back, Went to Tenochtitlan (Capital) and captured the leader for ransom. The people revolted, and the leader died, without a hostage, Cortes gathered the Rival Native Tribes and they conquered the Aztecs and claimed the land for Spain!
It was Named New Spain (Later it would become Mexico)
