Description:
Day irrelevant- the leader of Egypt, Nasser, nationalised the Suez Canal Company
- blocked Western European access to oil through the canal
- US, France and Britain threatened military action but withdrew when the Soviet Union backed Egypt
- 2/3 of Europe's oil had been imported through the Canal, so this created an energy crisis
