Chinese immigrants began arriving in the U.S. around this time, they worked on the railroad, in mines, and in the gold fields. They were welcome in the states until an economic depression in 1875. Opium became associated with the Chinese communities and became the focus of many white whose goal was to exclude Chinese from the U.S. In 1875, San Francisco passed the first anti-opium legislation.
