In 1891, pharmacist Asa Candler purchased the rights to Coca-Cola and the beverage, composed of caffeine and coca, spread throughout the country. Many people tried to imitate the beverage, the most potent imitant was Coca-Bola, containing 710 milligrams per ounce of cocaine. Starnes, who ran a dug treatment clinic, said that, "Coca-Cola, ' is doing more injury to the human race than all other drugs put together'" (Goode, 35).
