Description:

In an effort to preserve balance of power in Congress between slave and free states, the Missouri Compromise was passed admitting Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state, it was repealed by the Kansas-Nebraska Act. The compromise prevented further territorial expansion of slavery which compelled Northerners to seize and return escaped slaves to the South, others felt that it made the north seem more aggressive in its anti-slavery views and contributed to southern resentment, which may have led to the Civil War occurring sooner.
