Description:

Invented by Johann Gutenberg, the printing press was assisted by the increase in availability of paper from China. This contributed to the increase in urban literacy, development of primary education and increasingly informed populace that were able to discuss ideas and create a shared identity. However, government and church leaders were worried about the challenges this could create to their authority, and tried to harshly censor the books that were printed.
