In 1492 Christopher Columbus sets sail to find a direct water route west from Europe to Asia, but he never did. Instead he discovered the americas. On August 12, 1492 he had first landed on San Salvador Island. When he got there, he had thought that had discovered a new world, since millions of people already live there. Christopher Columbus made many other journeys, which marked the begging of centuries of transatlantic conquest and colonization, of the americas.
