At this point in time, Homo erectus have evolved with larger brains than Homo habilis, granting them higher levels of intelligence than their predecessors. Homo erectus was unique in the sense that it now began walking heel to toe as modern humans do now, along with the benefit of locking knees. They were also found to have less hair than Homo habilis before them.
Homo erectus continued in creating tools as generations did before it, though tools became much more advanced at this time. Homo erectus began using hand axes made from stone. There is also evidence of Homo erectus creating rafts for travelling to islands, making Homo erectus the first hominids to use tools for a purpose other than preparing food.
Homo erectus is also regarded as the first generation of hominids capable of creating fire, which they used to cook food. No other species in the world had developed such a capability, setting Homo erectus far apart from anything like it.
Homo erectus are also noted as having formed hunter-gatherer societies, making them the first generation of hominids to recognize society and band together into groups. This was a massive step in the direction of human society as we know it today.
