b. Free Officers stage a coup in 1952 on a nationalist platform
i. Kick the Brits out
ii. Restore pride that had been lost in the 1949 defeat in Israel - They believed that the reason they were humiliated was because of the poor leadership by the British influenced monarchy
iii. Egyptian regional leadership- They felt like they needed to recover their position as a leader in the middle east
iv. Create Arab socialism
v. Neither East nor West- This is the beginning stages of the cold war but the free officers believe that if they are strong enough, they won’t need to pick a side
