A territorial dispute over Milan led Florence and Naples to ally and Milan and France to ally. Charles VIII of France invaded Italy in order to prevent a unified Italy from threatening his power. This marked the beginning of the Habsburg-Valois wars, which prevented the Italian city-states from unifying into a single state.
