In 1940 U.S, mathematician and inventor George Robert Stibitz and Samuel Williams, a colleague at Bell Labs, built the Complex Number Calculator. They accomplished the first remote computer operation by inputting problems via a teleprinter,1. This is likely the first example of remote access computing.
2. It was one of the first machines to make use of relays.
3. Specifically, it could perform the operations required to perform multiplication and division of complex numbers.
