15 août 1500 - Protestant Reformation
Description:
The Protestant Reformation was a major European movement aimed at reforming the beliefs and processes of the Roman Catholic Church. This occurred because of the corruption in the Catholic Church, and people saw a need to change the way it worked. Some of the corruption included the rule that only church authorities could interpret the bible, allowing the church to have complete control over what was preached to the people. The church also abused their power with the church services being held in Latin, so no one could contest with what they said. Another way included the sale of indulgences, which was a system in which rich people could effectively buy forgiveness for their sins. The church responded to the Protestant Reformation in two ways. The first was was The Catholic Church recognizing that some Protestant criticisms were valid, and successive sessions of the Council of Trent, held between 1545 and 1563, aimed to deal with these issues. On the other end of the spectrum, military expeditions became part of the reaction to the Reformation, as Catholic kings and princes sought to capture the territory of Protestant Monarchs, such as when Holy Roman Emperor Charles V unsuccessfully invaded England at an attempt to depose Protestant Queen Elizabeth.
